Making Money Blogging

There are a vast variety of ways opening up for bloggers who are interested in making money blogging.

First off, for profitable blogging, you have to know the three magic words:

Traffic, traffic, traffic

Why is generating traffic so important? Because for most methods of online income generation, your income is a function of traffic. If you double your traffic, you’ll probably double your income (assuming your visitor demographics remain fairly consistent). If you can generate serious traffic, it’s really hard to fail.

One note of caution though, traffic doesn't automatically translate into online income. It's all about how that taffic converts to income.

Before we get to the methods of making money blogging, let's play:

Mind Puzzle: What is as big as a hippopotamus, the same shape as a hippopotamus, but weighs a lot less than a hippopotamus?

(The answer is elsewhere on this page.)

8 Methods of Profitable Blogging

Professional bloggers such as Steve Pavlina, caution not to put all your eggs in one basket. It's best to spread your interests across multiple revenue streams.

1. Advertising Programs

There are currently a variety of viable advertising options for bloggers interested in making money blogging. Possibly the most well-known is Google Adsense.

More recent additions in this category that many are using successfully are Chitika's eMiniMalls and WidgetBucks

Then there's also Blogads.com -- one of the first blog specific ad networks.

2. Sponsorships

Popular blogs have the advantage of being able to run ad campaigns of their own. Many blogs explore sponsorships with advertisers. Sponsorship is also happening on a post by post basis with some bloggers being paid to write on certain topics by companies - either in one off or a regular fashion - and they are able to make big money from their blogs doing so.

3. Affiliate Programs

There are a variety of affiliate programs like Amazon, Linkshare, Clickbank and Commission Junction that can add to making money blogging.

4. Digital Products

Bloggers have long since jumped on the bandwagon of digital assets and some are doing really weill with selling their own e-books, courses and tele-seminars.

5. Blog Network Opportunities

More and more bloggers are combining writing for themselves on their own blogs with taking on blog network blogs as additional income streams. There are distinct advantages of blogging for an established network as they potentially handle the set up costs, promotion, admin and search engine optimization.

6. Donations

Tip Jars and donation buttons have been a way of making money blogging for years. There are several known cases of bloggers who have been able to quit their day jobs and blog full time due to the generosity of their readers.

7. Merchandising

An increasing number of bloggers -- especially those with a cult following -- make a few extra dollars from their blogs by selling branded products through programs like Cafepress.

8. Consulting and Speaking

Blogging has the ability to establish people as experts in their niche. There are bloggers who are able to charge themselves out for speaking and consulting work due to being perceived as leaders in their field -- and in some cases even as minor celebrities!

How Much Do Bloggers Spend?

Surprisingly little. There are some basic blogging costs such as hosting. Some bloggers also dabble in advertising to drive traffic to their websites, for example AdWords and StumbleUpon. A growing number of professional bloggers also pay ghost-writers to develop content for them.

That said, successful blogs rely heavily on word of mouth and organic ways of attracting income.

We recommend that you experiment with various ways of making money blogging. You may just hit the jackpot!
