Not sure about you, but when I first started working on creating a website, I could have used a jargon buster to clarify the terminology around website building, having never attempted building a website before, but always having wanted to it would have been an invaluable tool..... as most of the terms are actually just about commonsense, covered all over by a heavy layer of marketing bull!.
Internet Terminology
Hope you find the following jargon buster meanings and acronyms helpful:
Adwords
Google's search-marketing product. Google places relevant ads alongside search results. Setting up an Adwords account is simple. There is a one-off small set-up fee, and you decide how much you spend on your ad campaign in real time.
Alt Tags
Text included in an HTML < img > tag to be displayed in place of an image when it can't be displayed, or when the mouse is hovered overed it.
Bandwidth
The amount of data that can be transferred in a specified amount of time. With websites, this tends to refer to the amount of data that can be uploaded and downloaded per month.
Body
Everything within the < body > section of an HTML page is displayed in a web browser.
Blog
Short for web log, a blog is a regularly updated website that usually contains diary entries or news stories.
Browser
An application used to view web pages. The most popular is Microsoft Internet Explorer, but Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari are significant others.
Compression
Storing data in a format that uses less disk space and bandwidth. Image files are typically compressed to make them around the tenth of their original size.
CSS
Cascading Style Sheets provide more control over layout than HTML. When you use CSS, you can make a single change that automatically updates ever page on you site.
Domain Name
A unique address for a website. The domain name includes evertyhing up to the .com or other extension; for example, www.visit-chiang-mai-online.com.
Download
Transfer of a file from a website to your computer's hard disk.
Dynamic
Refers to any interactive parts of a website, such as a Google Map or a YouTube video, where visitors can control the objects' behavior.

A named container on your hard disk that stores a collection of files.

The process of making your website more relevant for certain keywords to generate organic traffic (that is, a naturally higher search ranking when someone searches for these keywords).
Unique Selling Proposition (USP)
Your USP is what sets you apart from the competition, or what makes your product or service a 'must have' item. A good USP captures in a single phrase why a prospect should deal with you and not with someone else.
